Hey guys...Another devotion for you!

I was thinking about the ‘Just one’ thing Craig talked about and wanted to share. There are plenty of times when people say things and they just don’t stick with me, however this time God clearly wanted to challenge me on this and the cogs started to do a bit of work in that brain of mine! So when my brain starts to work (which isn’t very often) I write things down and see if other people have similar thoughts to me. The very first thing I came across was a picture of a candle and with a sentence beside it. The sentence said ‘Just One candle can wipe out the darkness’ I’m sure you all know what’s coming next.

Matthew 5:14 – 15 say’s “You are the light of the world—like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden. ¹⁵ No one lights a lamp and then puts it under a basket. Instead, a lamp is placed on a stand, where it gives light to everyone in the house.

‘Just one’....It only takes one to make a difference. If each one of us show love to just one person what difference can we make? If you are that light in the darkness, even if you’re the only light in the place where you are, can you make a difference?

Anyone heard of Mordecai Ham JR? This guy led 289 meetings, which helped 303,387 come to know Jesus as their saviour. A Man named Billy Graham gave his life to Jesus in one of those meetings. Billy Graham then went on to become one of the biggest evangelists in the world reaching millions around the world.....’Just One’ person did this!

Now what I’m not saying is I want you to go out and be the next Billy Graham, although that would be buzzin! I’m also not mentioning people like this so we feel bad because we aren’t reaching loads of people. All I’m saying is, ‘Just one’ of us to reach’ Just one’ person. We don’t need to reach millions but if each of us reached out to one person think of the possibilities. We reach one person and then that person reaches someone else and so on. The likes of Billy Graham reached millions with the help of God, so how easy can it be for God to help us reach ‘Just One’.

We have a lot of people in 4:12, just think of the impact we could have on Dundonald or even Belfast by reaching out to one person each. We can all reach out and help someone. It may be a challenge for you, but God is a lot bigger than anything we’re going to face. Let’s go for it, reach out to someone!

Thanks for checking out my first 4:12 devotion, I hope that you have a think about what’s been playing on my heart over the past couple of weeks and I pray that God really speaks and blesses you!



I’m sure most of you have heard the story of David and Goliath. It’s one of the most popular accounts in the Old Testament and was definitely my favorite as a child.


You’re probably familiar with the heroic faith of the shepherd boy David, who defeated Israel’s largest enemy. Who came out of obscurity and by chance heard Goliath taunting the Israelites whilst taking food to his brothers on the front line and decided to take the fight to the Philistines.



There’s a part of this story that I want to highlight that you may not be so familiar with. I’m talking about one of the events that led up to this epic showdown:



1 Samuel 17: 38-40



King Saul, offered his own armor to David. This was a massive honour, but there was a major problem: David was only a teenage boy, and King Saul would have been a tall, impressive, physical man. Simply put, there was not a chance that Saul’s armor would fit David. It probably looked like a toddler trying to wear his Dad’s shoes. Even if had fit, David had never worn armor before. He wasn’t a soldier, he was a shepherd.



And as we know, David declined the armor and opted to use the humble weaponry of a shepherd—a staff and a sling, tools that he used day after day. We know what happened from there, God gave David a glorious victory!



So why am I highlighting Saul’s armor? We have a tendency to compare our talents with the talents of others. Especially as we’re growing up, trying to find out what we’re good at, what we like, in that process of defining our own identity. Constantly comparing ourselves with others.


Sometimes we obsess over the things we can’t do instead of improving on the things we can do. It’s as though we are saying, “God you made a mistake when you created me. You gave me the wrong talents.” I must tell you, this kind of attitude does not glorify God.



I love to sing, but I will never lead worship, it’s just not in my skill set. God has, however, given me other gifts. I went through a type of “audition” when I was still a teenager. When I was at university, I was given an opportunity to lead meetings and preach at the youth groups that I was apart of.



At first, I was terrified of public speaking, but I sensed God wanted me to step out in faith and try it. They weren’t the best talks I had ever given, but they weren’t disasters either. 
No one went to sleep, no-one threw Bibles at me, and no one accused me of preaching heresy. The feedback, in fact, was quite encouraging.



Since then, God has continued to expand my own preaching/speaking ministry. Do I have great speaking skills? Maybe not, though I’m always trying to improve. Are there preachers/speakers who are more gifted than I? Definitely, but that’s OK, I just want people to be blessed and touched by God when I speak.




OK, so some #Godthoughts.



Do you frequently compare yourself to others? Are you constantly trying to wear someone else’s armor? Follow the example of David: offer your gifts/talents to God, and EXPECT him to use them as only He can.



“Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God’s grace in its various forms. If anyone speaks, he should do it as one speaking the very words of God. If anyone serves, he should do it with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ. To him be the glory and the power for ever and ever. Amen.” 1 Peter 4:10-11



“Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of service, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who empowers them all in everyone.” 1 Corinthians 12:4-6



Be careful in comparing yourselves with others, it only leads down a path of disappointment. God hasn’t called you to live in the shadow of others but has called you, with all your God-given talents, traits and experiences to become more and more like His Son.

Hey, watched a short video recently on success and it really stood out to me.

There was a young guy who wanted to successful, so he went to this wise old man and asked him how he could reach the level the he was at. The old man told him if he wanted to reach the same level he would need to come to the beach the next morning. So the next morning the young guy turns up on the beach wearing a suit and looking all slick. (He should’ve worn shorts).

The old man grabs his hand and asks him “how bad do you want to be successful” and the young guy says “real bad”. The man then tells the young guy to walk out into the water until he’s waist deep. At this point the young guy is thinking the old man is crazy but he does it anyway. When he’s waist deep the old man tells him to come out further until the water reaches his shoulders. But again the old man tells him to come out further; the water by this point has reached the young guys mouth. The young guy then decides he’s had enough and is about to leave when the old man asks him “I thought you wanted to be successful”, so the young guy stays.

The old man tells him again to go out further and before the young guy has time to react the old man grabs his head and holds him under the water. The guys struggling and can’t get free but just before he passes out the man pulls him out! He then says to the guy, “if you want to succeed as bad as you want to breathe then you’ll be successful.”

This might sound strange but this video really challenged me when thinking about reaching people for Jesus. What am I trying to say? When you can’t breathe the only thing you’ll do is try to get some air, right? You don’t care about how people see you, you don’t care about how cool you are and you don’t care about anything other than getting air. I’m pretty sure that guy wanted air really bad.

So we say we want to reach people for Jesus but how bad do we really want it? Do we want it as much as the young guy wanted to be successful? Do we care about what people are thinking? Do we care about how cool we look or do we just care about people coming to know God?

Going by the video, people are willing to do anything to be successful, so why aren’t we more willing to do anything for Jesus? God was willing to do anything for us so that we would know him and have a relationship with him. He sent Jesus to die for us, Romans 5:6-8 says When we were utterly helpless, Christ came at just the right time and died for us sinners. Now, most people would not be willing to die for an upright person, though someone might perhaps be willing to die for a person who is especially good. But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners. God was willing to do anything for us, we need to be willing!

If we want to reach people for Jesus, we’ve got to be willing to give things up. How bad do you want it? Your family, your friends they all need to know Jesus as their saviour! Reaching people needs to be one of our priorities. Our job is to reach and show people the love of God! But are we willing to do anything? Are we constantly thinking what can I do for this person? How can I show them God’s love?

After doing this I definitely have to sit down and have a rethink about how bad I want to help people that need Jesus! So my question is...... How bad do you want it?

Hold On

Happy New Year guys! First devotion of the New Year, hopefully it speaks to someone! Just something I want to share with you this week is standing firm in your faith and holding on to the truth!

Have you ever had a day were you just felt that everything was against you? Maybe you’ve had a day at school were everything went wrong and you began to wonder why God let it happen to you. Well you’re not alone!

In 2 Thessalonians, it seems that the church was being taught some things that weren’t true and they were becoming discouraged. As believers they needed to stand firm in their faith! In Thessalonians 2: 15 Paul tells the church to stand firm and keep a strong grip on the teaching that he passed on to them.

You may not be able to believe everything you read on the internet or hear on T.V. but you can believe everything that the bible teaches. In 2 Thessalonians Paul tells the church to stay committed to what they know is true and not to be swayed by anything else. God’s desire for us is to stand firm and hold on to the truth, no matter what the cost. When people challenge what you believe, stand firm and hold on to what is true!

Jesus tells us in John 8: 31-32 “You are truly my disciples if you remain faithful to my teachings. And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” No matter who challenges you, no matter what they say to you, hold on to what the bible teaches! Only the truth can set you free! The Bible is the truth!

Just a wish list?

Hey....devotion time again! Lately I’ve been reading through John and came across something that you may already know but I just want to refresh it for you. In John 16:24 Jesus says “ask using my name, and you will receive”.

Have you ever prayed for something and it didn’t happen?

Even Jesus prayed for something he didn’t get. In Mark, Jesus asks God if could he avoid the suffering that would come his way but then also said to God that he wanted his will to be done. Imagine if God had of said yes to the first part of Jesus’ prayer. Where would we be? There would have been no suffering for Jesus, no cross, no death and there wouldn’t have been a resurrection. There would have been no hope for us, no grace and no relationship with God.

So is yes to all our prayers always the best answer? God wants us to pray, he wants us to talk to him! How often are your prayers just a wish list? Are you up for putting your desires to one side and doing what God wants you to do? Even if that means doing something that is the opposite of what you want?

This time of the year always seems to be about what we want! Put your desires to one side, even for a moment and see what God really wants. Go into the new year ready and open to Gods desires, willing to do what he wants even if that means forgetting about what we want! God wants what’s best for us and he knows what’s best for us. Even if sometimes we feel like there’s no point to what God is doing or we feel that he isn’t answering our prayers. He has a plan and we just need to be prepared for his desires!

Hey... Just another wee devotion for you all to have a think about! This time I want to focus on being part of the body of Christ, in 1 Corinthians 12:27 it says ‘All of you together are Christ’s Body, and each of you are part of it.’ So i just want to point a few things out about this verse, let’s see if it starts you thinking a bit more about being part of the body of Christ!

I was doing a bit of reading and came across this and I thought it was very good....

Think about your favourite band. They’re up on stage, the lights are flashing, the crowd is bouncing, your ears are thumping. Good times? Now imagine the drummer. What if he wasn’t there? How would the music sound without his or her creative banging? Or, what about the person controlling the volume of the instruments and microphones? What about the guys who set up the stage before?

Not everyone can be the lead singer but God has plenty of creative talents to go around. God gave the drummer the rhythm to keep the band on track. God gave the sound guy great ears to make the sound was perfect. God gave the set up guys the right heart to turn up hours before and make sure everything was in the right place without the complaining that could easily go with it.

So let’s look back at 1 Corinthians 12:27. ‘All of you together are Christ’s Body, and each of you are part of it.’ You may look at these great singers, great musicians and the great preachers and think I wish I had a great talent! What can I do for God?

You know what....God gave each and everyone 1 of us something special, something only you can do. It may not be leading worship, it may not be standing on stage preaching to crowds of people but it could be something in the background that no one ever notices. Your talent could be encouraging people, you could be a great person to work the sound, you could be willing to set up and tear down, maybe your someone on the words for worship, the list is endless. No matter what it is, it is important! Without all these people in the background many things would fail to work properly.

So don’t focus on the talents of others but focus on what you can do for God! What has God given you? God has something for each and every one of us. If the body doesn’t work together it’s going to fail! Make sure you consider how significant behind the scene jobs are! Take the time to thank people this week who may be doing a behind the scene job and take time to consider what you can do for God.

Relentless 2012 // Accommodation announcement

So... we are looking forward to our 2nd ever Relentless Camp in 2012! It will again be held in Ganaway, Millisle and we are excited for all that God is going to do!

I am delighted to let you know again that prices have been kept to a minimum - with beds costing £150 and all other accommodation costing £100 for the week INCLUDING FOOD! Amazing!

There are 8 boys beds and 8 girls beds available for people from 4:12... and they will go to the first people to hand over a £50 deposit... everyone else will be in a tent or caravan outside. So if you want a bed, get in there quick - and I will taking deposits from tomorrow - Sunday 11th December 2011.

All other deposits to secure your place for accommodation will be £20... those also can be paid ASAP!

Hey guys just something thats been on my heart lately is that we can be quick to judge people who seem to have some sort of label. In John 8: 1-11 the bible talks about the woman who was caught in adultery, everyone was quick to judge her and and the Pharisees wanted her to be stoned but Jesus had something else in mind.

I just wanted to point out that we can also be very quick to judge someone for what they seem to be doing wrong. School can be really bad for this. Everyday there’s something said about someone, everyday there is some sort of drama that goes on in your school! You hear words that are used to hurt and disappoint people, you may even use some of these words.

The woman in John 8 was labelled and people used different words to hurt her, this woman wasn’t just labelled but she was going to be stoned to death. Jesus however decided to act courageously and stand up for the woman. Jesus wasn’t afraid to help an outcast, he didn’t follow the crowd and listen to what others were trying to force upon him.

Think through your typical day, who are the people that are being judged or labelled? Who are the people that you are judging? We need to get rid of our judgemental attitude! We need to ask God to give us a loving attitude to those who need it most. We need to love people.

So let’s do it! Be courageous, stand up for those who are labelled or that you label yourself. It can be simple, say something nice or even just be kind to them! Let’s be a light in the Darkness!

I want to be a Life-giver -

Seeing rivers flow, not die,

Seeing others rise and fly,

Helping friends reach for the stars

even if they sometimes miss.

At least they can say they tried.

I want to be a Life-giver,

Generous in spirit and in heart,

Letting the forgotten make a start

at being Life-givers, too.

I want to be a Life-giver

because I am a God-gazer

not because it's about me

but because it's about Him

because life can't spring

from any other 'thing'.

I want to be a Life-giver

connected to the Source

and pointing to the Son -

standing in the shadow of the Light

celebrating Him.

World-changer.

I want to be a World-changer

not just a furniture re-arranger

or an 'it could be better' winger

or a 'have the left overs' stinger.

I want to be a World-changer!

A doer, not just a talker.

I want to spread the clothes of heaven,

No more or less than a poor man's dreams,

beneath the feet of Jesus.

I want to be a World-changer -

'Cos on a morning many winters ago

the tomb was open

and the curse was broken.

Death had to let go

and re-creation burst out

of an old wineskin

like water from a geyser,

Like the cry of a child

pushed into the world

and nothing

would shut Him up.

I want to be a World-changer

because it's started...

because the vanguards on the move...

and love is pushing out hate

and light is shining out

and darkness can't understand it

beat it

change it

hide it

kill it

stop it

win.

I want to be a World-changer

because there's safety in this danger.

There's meaning in this purpose.

There's joy in this mission

and too many others are missing

the power of life in all its fullness.

World-changer? Life-giver? God-gazer.

God, break in - then break out

Fill - then make me leak.

Plug me in and push me out.

In me, through me, around me.

Make me a Patrick.

Make me a Brendan.

God-gazing, life-giving, world-changing.

THE PURPOSE DRIVEN DECLARATION

Today I am stepping across the line. I’m tired of waffling and I’m finished with wavering,

I’ve made my choice, the verdict is in, and my decision is irrevocable.

I’m going God’s way. There’s no turning back now!

I will live the rest of my life serving God’s purposes with God’s people on God’s planet

for God’s glory. I will use my life to celebrate his presence, cultivate his character,

participate in his family, demonstrate his love, and communicate his Word.

Since my past has been forgiven, and I have a purpose for living, and a home awaiting

in heaven, I refuse to waste any more time or energy on shallow living, petty thinking,

trivial talking, thoughtless doing, useless regretting, hurtful resenting, or faithless worrying.

Instead I will magnify God, grow to maturity, serve in ministry, and fulfill my mission in the

membership of his family.

Because this life is preparation for the next, I will value worship over wealth,

“we” over “me,” character over comfort, service over status, and people over possessions,

position, and pleasures. I know what matters most, and I’ll give it all I’ve got.

I’ll do the best I can with what I have for Jesus Christ today.

I won’t be captivated by culture, manipulated by critics, motivated by praise, frustrated

by problems, debilitated by temptation, or intimidated by the devil. I’ll keep running my

race with my eyes on the goal, not the sidelines or those running by me. When times get

tough, and I get tired, I won’t back up, back off, back down, back out, or backslide.

I’ll just keep moving forward by God’s grace. I’m Spirit-led, purpose driven,

and mission-focused, so I cannot be bought, I will not be compromised, and I shall not

quit until I finish the race.

I’m a trophy of God’s amazing grace, so I will be gracious to everyone, grateful for every

day, and generous with everything God entrusts to me.

To my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, I say, "However, whenever, wherever, and whatever

you ask me to do, my answer in advance is yes! Wherever you lead and whatever the

cost I’m ready. Anytime. Anywhere. Anyway. Whatever it takes, Lord; whatever it takes!

I want to be used by you in such a way, that on that final day I’ll hear you say,

'Well done, thou good and faithful one. Come on in, and let the eternal party begin!'"
